How to Set the Perfect Dinner Table

Here are some tips from House Beautiful to help take the stress out of setting an elegant dinner table.  I made sure to take notes myself.  You can see the rest of this gorgeous New York apartment in my post Urban Beauty Inspired by Something's Gotta Give.

HB
An Inviting Dinner Table
A dinner party is truly elegant when the table looks flawless and is ready when guests arrive.

HB
Start with a Place Mat or Charger
A place mat is a lovely layer, but if you're using a charger, you really don't need one.

HB
Mix Up Your China
The dinner plate is placed on top of the charger. Don't be afraid to mix vintage and new china.

HB
Place Silverware
Forks go to the left of the plate — tines down if you are European. Knife and spoon are to its right. Place silverware in order of its use; work from the outside in.

HB
Use Cloth Napkins
The napkin is lightly starched, pressed, folded — and placed to the left of the plate.

HB
Try a Place-Card Favor
Place cards can be as formal as you like — or as simple. Try attaching them to a little gift.

HB
Keep Items Accessible
Salt and pepper cellars or grinders scattered around the table make them easy to reach.

HB
Water, White, and Red
Glassware is at the top right of the plate: water glass in front, white wine glass for first course next, then red wine.

Enjoy!
